Objective of the Game

Roulette is said to date back to ancient Greek times but was made popular in French casinos over the last century. Roulette is arguably the most recognizable of all casino games. Your objective is to successfully predict the outcome of the spin of the wheel. The Roulette wheel contains 37 beds into which the ball will drop following the spin. You can choose a variety of bets with wide-ranging rewards.

How to Play

Roulette is a simple game to learn and play that offers players a wide range of betting options from conservative to long shot with everything in between. Players are issued special coloured chips which are unique to the Roulette table. Chips are usually issued at the minimum bet value, but a player can request a higher value for his chips when cashing in. If a higher value is requested the dealer will mark that color with the requested value. Roulette tables have space for six to eight people with each player getting different colored chips to make it easy for the dealer to track bets.

Before the wheel spins, place your bet on one or more of the squares on the table. There are several different types of bet you can place:

Roulette Bet Comparisons House Advantage
Bet Payout American European
Red or Black*  1 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Odd or Even*  1 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Low or High*  1 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Columns 1 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Dozens 2 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Single Number 35 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Split Bet 17 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Corner Bet 8 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Five Number Bet 6 to 1 7.89% N/A
Street Bet 11 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
Line Bet 5 to 1 5.26% 2.70%
* with En Prison N/A 1.35%
* with Surrender 2.63% N/A

You can have a straight bet on 0 (paying 35-1!). In all other bets the ball landing on 0 will result in the bet being lost.

Minimum and maximum bet amounts are posted at the table. Some casinos have a minimum bet amount for Inside or Outside Bets. Inside bets are on specific numbers or combinations of numbers. Outside bets are on groups of numbers or colors. An Outside bet always loses on 0 or 00. There are ten different bets in American Roulette and nine different bets in European Roulette. The unique American Roulette bet is a Five Number bet which is the only bet to avoid in Roulette.

Roulette Variations

There are two types of Roulette tables. The American Roulette table has 38 numbers including 0 and 00. The French or European table has 37 numbers (it doesn’t have the 00). European and Atlantic City Casinos also feature the “En Prison” rule which is favorable to the player. Most European Casinos use the true En Prison rule. Atlantic City 00 wheels use a variation of the En Prison rule called Surrender.

EN PRISON: When En Prison is employed on European Roulette tables, an even money bet (Red, Black, Odd, Even, 1–18, 19–36) that results in a spin of 0 becomes imprisoned. If this imprisoned bet wins on the next spin, the original bet is released and returned to the player.

EN PRISON SURRENDER: Players only lose half of their bet on a spin of 0 or 00. (Only available on 00 Roulette wheels in Atlantic City.)

Roulette Strategy

Roulette is a game of luck with no betting system that will decrease the House Advantage. You can increase your chances of winning by doing the following:

• If you have a choice between American and European tables always choose the European table. (Some online casinos offer both.)

• Take advantage of the Surrender and En Prison rules if they are available by placing even money bets.

• Always avoid a Five Number bet on an American table.

• Don't try a Roulette betting system, they don’t work. It is impossible to decrease the House’s Advantage on a random Roulette wheel. Roulette is a fun game to play if you manage your money well and cash out when you reach a predetermined level. Also make sure to take advantage of any comps the casino offers.
